ways you can help
Different branches have varying needs for volunteers in the following activities.
Cooks
This involves preparing and cooking meals between 7.00am and 11.00am at our kitchen-based branches. Cooking is a team effort and so one person does not do the whole meal. Instead, volunteers can assist with different elements of the meal, perhaps the soup, various main course components, the dessert and so on.
Kitchen Helpers
Kitchen helpers assist with meal preparation, tidying and washing up at our kitchen-based branches between 7.00am and 11.00am.
Drivers
Drivers use their own cars to deliver meals to clients between 11.15am to 1.30pm. They receive an allowance for their vehicle use, although the distance involved is generally less than 15km. Between 15 and 25 meals are delivered per delivery round. Drivers must have their own comprehensive insurance.
Deliverers
Deliverers accompany drivers to deliver meals into the homes of recipients between 11.15am and 1.30pm. For safety and security reasons, both the deliverer and the driver deliver the meal to the recipient.
Emergency Drivers and Deliverers
You can also volunteer as an emergency driver or deliverer. Rather than being on a regular roster, you'll simply be called on to fill in when a regualr driver or deliverer can't make it.
Branch Officers and Committee Branch Officers
Branch Officers and Committee members assist in the running of Meals on Wheels branches and these are fulfilling and rewarding roles. Positions such as Chair, Kitchen supervisor or Co-ordinator, Staff Officer (volunteer rosters), Welfare Officer (client matters), Secretary and Treasurer are all filled by volunteers.
