MEDIA INFORMATION FOR MEALS ON WHEELS (SA) INC
Meals on Wheels (SA) Inc. was established in South Australia in Adelaide by Doris Taylor in 1953.
The iconic service is now a vital part of life for thousands of South Australians. Similar organisations operate across Australia and in other countries.
There’s a wealth of information on this website about Meals on Wheels and its history, but here’s some basic facts and contact details to assist you in putting together your story:
- The majority of our clients are frail aged with 70% over 80 years, and 65 per cent of clients are women.
- Clients receive a hot three-course meal, delivered between 11.15am and 1.30pm each weekday. Please take these times into account if you need to obtain interviews and vision.
- You can arrange access to one of our kitchens, but please call us first. Meals on Wheels has 100 branches throughout the State. More than two-thirds of meals are produced at 31 fresh-cook kitchens, while a further 20 per cent come from hospital-based branches, particularly in country towns. These kitchens are all run entirely by volunteers. The rest of our meals are produced at the Kent Town Cook Chill facility.
- Our service is the only one of its kind and could not exist without our dedicated army of volunteers.
