Meals on Wheels SA holds first hybrid AGM

Meals on Wheels SA held its Branch Officers’ Conference and 67th Annual General Meeting on Thursday the 28th of October at the Eagles Function Centre, Woodville South.

Although it was MoWSA’s 67th AGM, it was the first hybrid event, with 4 attendees via Zoom and over 80 delegates in-person.

Following a delicious morning tea of scones, jam and cream and a welcome by CEO, Sharyn Broer, President Bill Coomans took to the stage to present his Board Report. During his report, Bill thanked the volunteers for their hard work in ensuring continual service despite the challenges presented by the pandemic and noted an increase of 80,000 delivered meals on previous years. Bill also thanked our retiring Patron, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia and Mrs Le, joint Patrons Meals on Wheels Australia, Governor-General His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Rtd) and Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley for their support and acknowledged the work of the Board Members and staff.

Kevin Reid, Vice President Finance highlighted MoWSA’s financial position, noting volunteers donate a minimum of $15 million per year value in labour to Meals on Wheels SA. This is a HUGE number and we are sincerely grateful. Of the highlights, Meals on Wheels delivered an average of 4,218 meals per day across the state and meal services increased by 8 percent.

Ellie Hamilton, Board Member and Chair of the Stakeholder Engagement Committee explained the initiatives the Committee has been working hard on, to improve the way we communicate and engage with our range of stakeholders.

Heather Richardson, Board Member and Chair of the Branch Operations and Services Advisory Committee also spoke about the activities the Committee in helping improve branch operations including recommending ways to best communicate with branches, the creation of the Committee Handbook, providing feedback around the Branch Bulletin, addressing the issues around quality of frozen meals from regional hospitals and the roll-out of the Regional Workshops.

Sharyn returned to the stage to present a report from the Work, Health and Safety Committee addressing issues around COVID safe operations, improved hazard and risk reporting, bushfire safety, slips, trips and falls and wellbeing and culture. She then presented the CEO Report, highlighting the growth in customer base, the impact of the Really! marketing campaign and looking at the 2021-2024 Strategic Plan and how the current focuses align.

There was only one nominee for each of the three Board positions falling vacant at the AGM, with the incumbents re-elected without the need for a ballot. Congratulations to Vice President Services Heather Richardson, Vice President Finance Kevin Reid and Elected Member Alison Perrott on being elected to the Board for a further term.

Following a Q&A session with Sharyn Broer, Julie Bonnici and David Smith, guests enjoyed a delicious alternative drop lunch of roast beef with vegetables and chicken schnitzel, chips and salad.
