Meals on Wheels SA (MoWSA) has joined forces with local charity, Catherine House to support the nourishment and wellbeing, and improve food security of South Australian women experiencing homelessness.

Catherine House is a local organisation supporting women experiencing homelessness through accommodation and support services, education and employment pathways, mental health services and more.

The fortnightly delivery of nutritious meals is helping ensure the women are not only receiving adequate nutrition, but are also supported in managing their household budgets while trying to get back on their feet.

Chief Executive Officer of MoWSA, Sharyn Broer says the partnership is a valuable way for Meals on Wheels to support other vulnerable members of the South Australian community.

“Most people know us for providing meal services to older Australians to enable them to stay living independently in their homes, but we also nourish and improve food security in other members of our local community as well.”

Chief Executive Officer of Catherine House, Linda Matthews said the organisation is thrilled to have partnered with MoWSA.

“This partnership not only offers women with nutritional meals which is important for their physical and mental health, but assists them greatly with their weekly food budget.”

The feedback from the women receiving the meals has also been pleasing.

Kylie, a client of Catherine House said the meals have met her nutritional needs and helped ease the financial stress of grocery shopping.

“I am very fortunate to receive these nutritious meals from Meals on Wheels,” Kylie said.“The meals are tasty and healthy and knowing that there’s food being delivered helps take that stress away and reduces the financial burden.”

The partnership is supported through MoWSA’s Help Feed People in Need fundraising appeal.

“Thanks to the generous supporters of our Help Feed People in Need Appeal, we’ve been able to provide these meals at no cost to Catherine House to distribute on a regular fortnightly basis, which has been warmly welcomed by their clients experiencing homelessness,” Mrs Broer says.

“Access to a good, nutritious meal is a basic human right and we feel proud to be able to warm the hearts of these women.”
